Market Notes:

White Fly attack has cut starch production in Thailand 2010.

The total utilization of starch in the world in 2008 was 66 million tons. This may reach 75 million tons by 2012 - an annual growth rate of 2-3%. The US market growth rate is 2% per year, EU  2%,  Japan 1-2%, China and India, however, are expecting the growth to be 4-5 % - all the rest 3-4%. The world total rose at an average rate of 4.0% per annum in the past, so future growth is a rather conservative estimate.

Based on figures obtained from EU Commission and USDA a different estimate for starch production 2000 by starch origin is:

Starch in million tons 2000 Maize Potatoes Wheat Other Total
EU 3.9 1.8 2.8 0.0 8.4
US 24.6 0.0 0.3 0.0 24.9
Other Countries 10.9 0.8 1.1 2.5 15.2
World 39.4 2.6 4.1 2.5 48.5

Output by Product  2000 million tons starch equivalent US EU
Bio-ethanol 10.1 0.1
High fructose syrups 8.0 0.3
Other Syrups 3.2 3.6
Native and Modified Starches 3.6 4.5
Total 24.9 8.4

These figures are rapidly changing.  Cassava starch is increasing its market share and holds today 7.5 % of world starch market. This figure will rise as South East Asia, South America continue  production economics growth.

US is the largest starch manufacturer with bioethanol and  Fructose syrups together representing 72% of starch output.- Ethanol alone 40%.

China is the second largest starch supplier in the world. Output includes corn, potato cassava and wheat starch - native and modified. The output reached 17 million tonnes in 2008 and will probably grow to 25 million tonnes by 2020. China is also the second largest consumer of native starch in the world - the consumption is growing rapidly.

Starch Product Notes:

National Starch Novation functional starches based on waxy maize, tapioca, waxy rice and potato and produced by a physical process are classified in the EU as ingredients not additives. It means they are not described by E numbers on product packaging in line with clean label trends. It makes it possible prepare high-quality, natural, clean-labelled foods that can withstand the rigors of chilled and frozen distribution encountered in the food industry. The grow at a rate of above 10 % pro anno is driven by the "Clean Label".
