 INSPIRATION

"And Speaking of Discoveries…Donald Duck Credited with Invention
In 1964, when the freighter Al Kuwait capsized in the fresh-water harbor of Kuwait with a cargo of six thousand sheep, local citizens feared that the decaying animals would poison their supply of drinking water.

Fortunately, a Danish manufacturer, Karl Kroyer, remembered a 1949 Walt Disney comic book in which Donald Duck and his nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, raised a sunken yacht by stuffing it full of Ping-Pong balls.

Putting this duck wisdom to good use, Kroyer ordered 27 billion polystyrene balls to be injected into the hull of the Al Kuwait.  he freighter was successfully raised to an even keel, and the Kuwaiti water supply was saved.  Few people who admired this great engineering feat were aware that credit for the idea belonged to four fictional ducks—and the man who drew them, cartoonist Carl Barks.
